On 15 December 2014 Esteban Gutiérrez was appointed Ferrari’s test and reserve driver for the 2015 season, taking over the developmental role that had followed Jules Bianchi.
Ferrari’s confirmation of Esteban Gutiérrez marked a calculated step in reshaping its support structure ahead of a demanding 2015 programme. The team needed a driver able to deliver clean technical feedback across simulator work and limited on-track mileage, and Gutiérrez offered recent F1 race experience combined with a reputation for measured engineering input.
His arrival came at a sensitive moment for Maranello. Bianchi’s absence left a gap in the developmental chain, and Ferrari required continuity as new power-unit iterations and aero concepts were being refined. Gutiérrez’s two seasons with Sauber had familiarised him with Ferrari hardware, which made the transition smoother and allowed engineers to benchmark behaviour without resetting baselines.
The role also carried strategic weight. Ferrari wanted a reserve capable of stepping in without disrupting Vettel and Räikkönen’s programme, while still contributing targeted simulator correlations. Gutiérrez’s disciplined driving style suited that task, helping the team evaluate balance shifts and tyre usage patterns that were central to the era’s long-run competitiveness.
Although the position offered limited public visibility, it strengthened Ferrari’s operational depth. It also gave the Mexican driver a chance to recalibrate his career within a structured environment, maintaining a link to the grid at a time when seats were scarce.
