Haas confirmed on 10 January 2024 that Guenther Steiner had left as team principal with immediate effect. Director of engineering Ayao Komatsu was promoted to replace him.
Haas announced on 10 January 2024 that Guenther Steiner was leaving the team principal role with immediate effect, ending a long spell as the public face of the team’s Formula 1 project.
The decision mattered because Steiner had been central to Haas from its build-up to its championship debut in 2016. He helped establish the team’s structure, guided it through its early seasons and remained one of the most visible figures in the paddock during a period of uneven results. Under his leadership, Haas reached a best constructors’ finish of fifth in 2018, but the team had also slipped to the bottom of the standings in 2023.
Haas moved quickly to define the next phase by promoting Ayao Komatsu from director of engineering to team principal. That choice pointed to a more engineering-led structure at a time when the team needed better on-track execution and stronger technical progress rather than another broad reset.
The timing was significant as well. With the 2024 season approaching, Haas chose to make the leadership change before testing and before the new car’s competitive direction was fully set on track. That gave Komatsu the chance to begin shaping the team immediately.
Steiner’s exit marked the end of an important first chapter for Haas in Formula 1, while Komatsu’s promotion opened a new phase built around technical clarity and performance improvement.
