Willem Toet was born on 29 March 1952. He went on to become one of the most experienced aerodynamicists in Formula 1, with major roles at Benetton, Ferrari, BAR, BMW Sauber and Sauber.

Willem Toet was born on 29 March 1952 and later built a long career at the technical heart of Formula 1. As an aerodynamicist, he became part of several important factory and works-backed projects across different eras of the championship.

Toet entered Formula 1 with Benetton in the mid-1980s, working on aerodynamics and wind tunnel development at a time when the discipline was becoming increasingly decisive. That period gave him a central role in a team that evolved into a title-winning force and helped establish Benetton as one of the sharpest technical operations in the paddock.

He then moved to Ferrari as head of aerodynamics, taking on one of the most demanding technical positions in the sport. Later came senior work at BAR, followed by a move to BMW Sauber, where he again led the aerodynamic department. He also returned to Sauber in a further senior aero role, underlining how highly his technical judgement was regarded.

What made Toet significant was not only the list of teams, but the timing of his career. He worked through years when Formula 1 aero shifted from an important advantage to the defining performance battleground. That placed him in the middle of some of the sport’s most complex development races. His career stands as a link between older wind tunnel methods and the highly integrated aerodynamic structures that shaped modern Formula 1.
