Zandvoort Details Major 2020 Redevelopment

2 December 2019

On 2 December 2019 Circuit Zandvoort revealed extensive upgrades, including new banked corners, as preparations continued for Formula 1’s planned return in 2020.

The announcement on 2 December 2019 outlined how Zandvoort intended to reshape key parts of the circuit for its re-entry into the Formula 1 calendar. The project combined modern safety requirements with a desire to preserve the track’s narrow, flowing character. The most visible changes centred on the redesigned final turn and Hugenholtzbocht, both receiving steep banking to support greater cornering loads and to widen strategic options for drivers.

The banking was introduced not only to increase the chances of overtaking but also to handle the aerodynamic sensitivity of modern F1 cars. A higher minimum speed through these corners would help maintain downforce, reducing the risk of single-file running. At the same time the circuit required significant runoff revisions, new TecPro installations and improved access points for emergency crews to meet current FIA standards. These updates made the historic venue capable of supporting the speed profiles expected from the 2020 machinery.

The redevelopment also considered operational demands. Paddock space was expanded, and infrastructure upgrades aimed to accommodate larger hospitality structures and heavier transport traffic. These adjustments ensured the event could function at the scale expected of a modern Grand Prix weekend.

The unveiled plan demonstrated a balance between heritage and practicality. Zandvoort’s narrow dunes layout remained intact, while targeted construction created a circuit shaped around today’s safety and racing philosophy.
